What Really Happens Between Locum Pharmacy Shifts

What Happens Between the Shifts

When people think about locum staffing, they usually picture one thing: filling a vacancy. A pharmacy needs cover, a locum is booked, the shift happens. Job done.

But a lot of the work that actually makes locum staffing work well happens quietly, in between the shifts themselves.

Before a booking is confirmed

Long before a locum arrives at a pharmacy, there's a process of checking that the placement is right, confirming availability, making sure compliance requirements are up to date, and matching the locum's experience to what the pharmacy actually needs. It's not glamorous work, but it's the difference between a shift that runs smoothly and one that doesn't.

After the first shift

Once a locum completes a first booking with a pharmacy, we follow up with both sides. How did it go? Would the pharmacy welcome them back? Did the locum enjoy the branch? These small check-ins often get missed elsewhere, but they're what allow us to build an accurate picture of which pairings work well and to avoid repeating ones that don't.

Keeping things moving

Between bookings, there's also a constant undercurrent of coordination: chasing availability before diaries fill up, flagging upcoming gaps in cover, and reconnecting pharmacies with locums they've worked well with before. None of this shows up on an invoice, but it's often what prevents last-minute scrambles for cover.

Handling the awkward bits

Not every placement goes perfectly, and when something doesn't work, sorting it out is part of the job too; whether that's finding alternative cover at short notice, having a straightforward conversation about what didn't fit, or simply making a note for next time. Doing this well, and doing it consistently, is part of what keeps trust intact on both sides.

Why it matters

None of this is unique to any one booking. But taken together, it's the quiet, ongoing work that sits behind every shift that runs well. It's easy to notice when cover falls through but it's much harder to notice all the times it didn't, because someone was doing this work in the background.

As a small, experienced team, this is where we spend a lot of our time. Not just matching people to shifts, but making sure the process around each booking is looked after properly so pharmacies and locums can focus on the work itself.
